Name: Randvi
Journal:
meadqueen
Canon: Assassin's Creed (Valhalla)
Age: 29
Species: Human
Canon Point: Immediately after the conclusion of "Blood From a Stone" but before Eivor completes "Taken For Granted"
Condition: Girl's probably got some hypertension but basically fine.
History: Randvi grew up as a young noblewoman in Norway with her sister Thora. Thora does not appear in the game but considering the nature of the letter from her that you can snoop on (instructing Randvi that if her husband won't sleep with her she should find someone who will) they seem to be pretty close. Randvi was a bit wild as a teenager, roaming the mountains behind her village, hunting and sailing, and had big dreams of wider travel and becoming a wandering jomsviking (basically a mercenary) one day. However, war broke out between her own clan and the rival Raven Clan, and this war was ended by a marriage between Randvi and Sigurd, the son of the Raven Clan's jarl.
She left her own village for the Raven Clan's home in Fornburg to start life with her new husband. In many ways, Sigurd was the best case scenario for an arranged political marriage: he was near to her in age, and charming and good-tempered for the most part. However, he had big dreams of glory for himself, and only stayed in Fornburg for a year after their marriage before leaving on a two-year trip of conquest that sent him as far as Constantinople. This left Randvi in an awkward situation in Fornburg both because she had not yet provided Sigurd with an heir, and because she was filling in for many of his duties with Styrbjorn, the clan's jarl. During her husband's absence, she formed a strong friendship with his adopted sister Eivor, eventually developing (and then repressing as hard as possible) romantic feelings for her.
Soon after Sigurd's return, Styrbjorn pledged the Raven Clan's allegiance to King Harald Fairhair, as he had lost his taste for war after witnessing the atrocities perpetrated by Kjotve the Cruel (who had murdered Eivor's birth parents during a feast in Styrbjorn's honour) and the war that had ended in Sigurd and Randvi's marriage, and Harald promised a lasting peace. Furious that he would never be king, Sigurd convened a group of Raven Clan members who were against becoming Harald's subjects (including both Randvi and Eivor) and made plans to depart and create a new kingdom in England.
The Raven Clan settled in England in a camp that had been abandoned by the Ragnarssons (who had moved on to conquering more lucrative areas) and renamed it Ravensthorpe. Any hopes of getting to know her husband better were dashed pretty much immediately - Sigurd stayed in the village long enough to fix up the longhouse and raise a few tents before leaving again to try and secure alliances for his nascent kingdom. He placed Eivor in charge as Chieftain in his absence and named Randvi Chief Strategist (perhaps knowing that keeping a cool head isn't really in Eivor's nature and she would need someone to direct her).
This is how things are now for Randvi in England: she spends most of her days poring over maps in the longhouse, planning alliances, trade agreements, raids and battles, as well as dispatching Eivor on various missions and keeping track of the needs of villagers as a civilian population grows around them. She's been in one small battle when Ravensthorpe was attacked by members of Rued's clan, and for a few months, she trained the teenage Saxon prince Ceolbert in affairs of state (and he helped her update her old maps) before he was sent to Sciropescire to become ealdorman. She has not left the settlement once since their arrival, and is beginning to feel trapped and anxious. Not to mention that spending all this time working closely alone with Eivor is not helping her repression situation at all.
Personality:
Pros:
-Organized: For someone who had a bit of a crazy youth, Randvi has a talent for planning and organizing alliances and events, and understanding and managing the relationships between people in close quarters (she's the one who lets you know which buildings you can build in the settlement, and at one point you can find a note she's written of various villager complaints to manage). She's good at reading and drawing maps and can manage correspondence in two languages.
-Kind Hearted: Randvi takes young Ceolbert under her wing almost immediately, and tries to manage disputes between villagers and other issues they may have (such as Tove grieving after her mentor's death). When Magni mentions that his horse was stolen, Randvi is the first to be concerned about helping him get her back. Later in the game when Sigurd returns injured, she does her best to take care of him despite his cruelty towards her. Also Eivor adopts a giant wolf she found in a basement and Randvi lets her (the wolf) sleep in the longhouse.
-Diplomatic: Randvi deals with a lot of important people and various types of political tensions, and has learned how to manage people to try and turn situations in her favour. This doesn't always work (sometimes when there are strong emotions things still get out of control) but overall she manages well in the negotiator role.
Cons:
-Repression: Randvi puts her duty above everything else, which leads to her suppressing most of her natural personality, which is more carefree and fun-loving, in favour of what she describes as a "staunch and stoic woman". In a later mission Eivor agrees to take her on a small tour outside the settlement and during this less than one day long adventure she volunteers to slaughter a camp full of bandits, flirts with a random guy for fun, bullies Eivor into a drinking contest and declares herself the "Mead Queen", jokes about how she would have slept with Soma, the jarlskona of Grantebridge, and makes Eivor race her to climb a sunken ruin. All this repression has her kind of tense and upset the rest of the time, and her default "relaxed" standing animation is hunched over with clenched fists.
-Bitterness: This is also something that she hides well, but Randvi's lot in life isn't what she'd dreamed it would be. Even married life isn't quite what she'd imagined, considering that she's been married for five years and only spent one of those with her husband. She's lonely but also doesn't actually like spending time with Sigurd (Eivor asks her if she's excited that he's returning and her immediate response is essentially "he's going to fart in my bed"), and can't talk about it with anyone because he's the jarl and outranks everyone. Not to mention that all of this misery is basically for nothing since the two clans united another way three years later anyway. There's a simmering anger there that doesn't come out much but can come across as surprisingly mean when it does.
-Indecisive: The negative side of the 'organized' trait is that she's very good at listing the pros and cons of everything, overwhelming herself with them, and not doing anything. She doesn't actually even need to still be married since the peace treaty was annulled when both clans were absorbed into Harald's kingdom, divorce is legal for Norse and Sigurd has all but abandoned her at this point, but she's paralyzed by all the possibilities (what happens to her in the Raven Clan if she's not attached to Sigurd anymore? Who would be the advisor if she couldn't do it? What would happen with Eivor? Would she be able to return to Norway?) so she doesn't do anything. She's good at advising other people but terrible at making decisions for herself.
Inventory:
- This woman has so much clothing (fox fur cape, two wool over tunics, a mail shirt, a long-sleeved shirt, leather bracers, trousers, boots, underwear, a bunch of necklaces, a leather cord in her braid)
- A stupidly complicated belt with a decorated war hammer and a drinking horn hanging from it, and a pouch at the back containing various herbs/healing items (there is some narwhal tusk in there and it does not do anything but she thinks it does) and a small whittling knife
